Mom #MTBoS30 - 8


My mom passed away about 6 years ago.  I miss her!  I was blessed to have a wonderful mom!  

She taught me many things ... 

... how to clean and keep house
             ... how to sew ... 
    ... how to cook ... 
 ... she taught me hospitality - how to entertain guests with ease ... 
        ... how to worship 

Mom loved children ... even though she children of her own she kept foster children for a while.  I learned to help care for those little ones!  I was so excited that in her last Christmas she got to hold her great grandson!

Mom loved music, reading, gardening, and the beach!  No coincidence that those are my favorite things as well!

Her favorite thing was possibly fishing.  I get excited when others reel in the fish ... but that's one thing I didn't learn to love ... I prefer to watch!

When my sons were babies, she told me there are no perfect mothers.  That mothers make the best decision they can make on any given day ... 
                                            ... Mom was not perfect :) but she was wonderful!

Gratitude - #MTBoS30 - 6

So grateful for educators in my life ... past and present.

My high school English teachers were amazing ... one loved theater, and taught with flair; the other loved literature and challenged us to think deeply about what we read.

My choral instructor, Lou Sawyer, was amazing, uber talented.  He held us to such high standards, yet taught with compassion and humor.  Loved him!

My primary instructor in my Master's program ... Dr. Joyce VanTassel-Baska.  I can't begin to share all I learned from her.  I remember my first class, the first night.  I knew in that moment that my professional journey was on a new trajectory.

Negative voices as well ... the counselor who said I shouldn't take algebra in 8th grade, the dean who said all elementary majors had to minor in reading - not math as I was requesting, the principal who said I would make a terrible administrator.  Yes, I am grateful for the negative voices, which caused me to listen carefully along they way, to examine my strengths for myself.  Those voices spurred me to study, to prepare, to take "life-long" learning to heart.

I'm grateful for my colleagues, fellow teachers with whom I partnered, some with whom I had the opportunity to supervise teaching.

Kaye taught me that history is all about story.  And she is a masterful storyteller.

Rosemary taught me that grammar is essential - which she taught with old fashioned fervor!  Her passion spurred students to do well.  She encouraged me to become an administrator - a position I learned to love.

Dianne and Pat, two amazing kindergarten teachers, taught me about the joy of teaching the littles.  Their classrooms were filled with joy, laughter, love for learning ... and their children knew they were well loved.

Jo Ann, who died much too young from cancer - taught me about dying gracefully.

Joy, whose passion for literacy is both exhilarating and exhausting, taught me to study research, to know what works and why it works.

Connie, an amazing school leader, who taught me the value of support, collaboration, friendship.

And these are only a few, I could go on ... so many educators, dear people I call friends!

This is my retirement year.  My bucket is full!

I am blessed to have been taught by and worked with so many awesome teachers!

#MTBoSBlaugust 10: Prescription for that overwhelmed feeling ...

The post will be short tonight  ...  feeling that overwhelmed/paralysis feeling ... need to strike something BIG off my to-do list :)  Maybe tomorrow!

Tonight ... list of gratitude ... and top of the list ...

My Twitter friends!  I am especially grateful for the group that hangs out at #EduRead ... they inspire me, challenge me, and encourage me!  I love our conversations ... the reflective moments when we think deeply about our practice. I'm grateful for those professional conversations, for reflective moments.

And, yes, there is so much more ...

Yesterday, was one of those ordinary days ... simple, quiet, restful. I did a load of laundry, worked online on some lesson planning, had lunch with family, watched a movie, stepped out for my favorite hamburger. Just imagine all that I have to be thankful for encapsulated in that one sentence! I have multiple sets of clothes, sweet family, advanced technology, entertainment ... and delicious food!

Today I attended a training; selected to be a trailblazer in technology - grateful for the opportunity and ... the materials given to my classroom; the challenge to go forth and do well; and the support promised to collaborate and celebrate. Thankful for a school district that focuses on students, providing an excellent education first, and testing much further down the list of discussion points!

I'm thankful for the to-do list that has me worn down tonight ... it is evidence of a job, a profession, a calling that I love!  Thankful tonight for rest, comfort ... for the sleep I will enjoy and the flexibility of another slow morning! For returned energy that is sure to follow that morning cup of coffee!

kudos to period 2

We completed our first week back ... the first week of our second semester.  

On Wednesday, we were working on solving systems of equations by graphing ... and our problems were word problems.  Our team chose problems that compared costs of various services or products.

My second period class rocked that day!  They participated in our guided notes and when we broke up into groups to practice word problems the room hummed with math talk!  I was blown away by their engagement.

So that afternoon, I sent a simple message to their parents via email.  I bragged on their participation and engagement.

A parent wrote back ... He even helped his little brother with his math last night.  What ever you did...THANK YOU!

I don't know what I did ... don't know that I did anything differently!  But I'm happy glad for that one precious hour this week!

Curtains and more!

It's been a long day!  I'll start with the end ... my faithful volunteer and best friend met me at school after a day of meetings ... he put up my curtains for me!

This pic is not all that great ... but the result is awesome!  The classroom environment is coming together!

My first day of new teacher orientation was good!  I felt a little self-conscious at times about my age and experience.  The rooms were filled with teachers (about 350 of them) many of whom could have been my sons and daughters.

Not every session was engaging but I did learn good information about this new district.  We discussed effective practices contrasting them with unacceptable ones.  We reviewed the seven principles in Robyn Jackson's book, Never Work Harder Than Your Students and Other Principles of Great Teaching.  IT specialists helped us get online, get our email set up, and showed us some great resources!  I saw several short clips of inspiring videos ... my favorite was about the Panyee Soccer Club.

I'm grateful today for new beginnings ... and even as I type those words, I am reminded of a favorite Scripture ... "Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail.  They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness."

I am enjoying this new adventure before me!
