Factors and Multiples Game - prep for Factoring!

I saw this tweet this morning ...
I decided to check out the game!  LOVE it for a bit of fun with factors and multiples!  Here's my first result ...


It would be fun to do this with students ... then post different chains around the room, have students analyze moves, suggest different patterns. What could I have done differently in the chain above to increase the number of links?

Use the activity BEFORE factoring polynomials to improve thinking about possible factors!

Factoring ... which method works best?

In a week, we will start our unit on solving quadratics.  We are in the midst of a short unit on the characteristics of quadratics where we talk about the vertex, axis of symmetry, the intercepts, the standard form, the vertex form, etc.  Students are adept at analyzing a graph of a parabola and interpreting the meaning of specific values in problem situations.

We have not yet made the connection between the x-intercepts, zeros, and solutions to quadratic equations.  I will start there as an introduction to the unit on solving.

And then we will review factoring.  Right now, the plan is to use at least 3 methods in factoring ...

In all of these methods we use the "X" puzzle to help students organize their factors.

Last year I refused to teach my Algebra 1 students the Kick It method.  It seemed so contrived at the time.  This year, I think I want to teach students what some call the AC method.  I read about it here.  The Kick It method and the AC method are very similar.  I don't believe it will be come the method of choice, but I will at least demonstrate it.  Factoring by grouping makes so much more sense to me.

Because of the way our curriculum department schedules units, we will have only one class period to review factoring!  It will be tight for sure.  

As class practice I'll either use a circuit or play the spoons game!

If I use a circuit (a loop) ... students will work in pairs to factor problems posted around the room.  The solution set to one equation will be found on another poster ... they work that second problem ... look for the solution set ... and so on.  If they work the problems correctly, the loop closes.  I love self-checking practice.

If we play the spoons game, students will work in teams to factor equations.  Answer cards will be on the table - one less card than the number of teams.  I know my students would like this game!

After students have had practice with multiple methods of factoring, they will get to choose the method they prefer in the rest of the unit.

X Marks the Spot!

This past week I had the opportunity to attend our district's just in time math workshop.  The focus of the day was quadratics ... primarily factoring.  The goal was to introduce teachers to multiple ways to present factoring.  Since I have been out of the classroom a while, I found the presentation refreshing!

In the next few weeks, we will teach polynomials, and then attributes of quadratics.  I plan to introduce factoring using those attributes ... as we examine the x-intercepts ... demonstrating how those roots are solutions to the equations.  Obviously this limits us to very specific graphs ... ones that integer roots that are easy to see on a graph.

Then as we begin to pursue factoring in earnest, we will use "flashback" to illustrate the inverse relationships between multiplying and factoring.

  1. We will use x puzzles to build number sense ... numbers that multiply to equal one number while adding to equal another number.  I found these puzzles online (Sum and Product Pre-Factoring Puzzles) ... I plan to use the x puzzles even before we get to multiplying polynomials ... just as puzzles!  I hope that just exploring them as puzzles before we get to factoring will reduce anxiety in factoring.
  2. Algebra Tiles will help to demonstrate the area model of multiplication.  We'll use the tiles for factoring as well.  I plan to use the ones at Illuminations for online practice.
  3. From there we will use the "box method" (an array) to multiply and then to work backwards to factor.

One method I don't plan to use that was presented at the workshop is the "Kick It" or "Kick Back" method. It seemed contrived - a bit of math magic.  If you want to read more about it, check out this blog post!

I noticed that Julie at I Speak Math has a template for X-Box Factoring ... I plan to borrow it to slip into our dry-erase sleeves as we practice!

I'm looking forward to our new unit ... first a few Laws of Exponents, and then ... polynomials!
