#70Days - an ordinary day

Day 3

Devotional phrase this morning inspired by our Pastor's sermon: from Job, "Surely I spoke of things I did not understand, things too wonderful for me to know. ... My ears had heard of you but now my eyes have seen you." Our Pastor spoke about the theology of suffering this morning.  I'm pondering his point, that the reasons for suffering defy conventional wisdom.  We live in a broken world, and because of that brokenness there is suffering.  God allows suffering to invite us to know Him more deeply, more intimately. I, personally, have known little suffering.  My blessings are many.  My prayer is that in the time of suffering I will draw near to God and proclaim with Job, "Though He slay me, I will hope in Him."

Today was one of those ordinary days ... simple, quiet, restful. I attended church, had dinner with my family, swam in the backyard, read and rested most of the afternoon. Just imagine all that I have to be thankful for encapsulated in that one sentence! I have the freedom to worship as I please, a beloved family, plenty of food, a backyard oasis, and leisure time!

Bonhoeffer says ... "In ordinary life we hardly realize that we receive a great deal more than we give, and that it is only with gratitude that life becomes rich."  I'm grateful for this ordinary day!
