Equations Up and About!

We are working on equations.  Two activities that are in the works for this week are:

1.  Equation Circuit:  Use 12 sheets of paper.  Label each one with a letter of the alphabet.  Put a problem in the center of the paper; in the upper left hand corner put an answer to a different problem.  If set up correctly, students will work a problem, find the answer on another poster, solve that problem, find the answer on another poster ... until they complete the circuit.  Here is an Equation Circuit.

2.  A colleague created this Solve problems around the room.  Write out equations on index cards.  Write solutions on posters (all equations have one of 6 solutions).  Distribute cards to students.  Use a timer ... give students 60 - 90 seconds to solve the equation on their card.  When they solve it they stand next to the poster that has the solution.  After checking work, students swap cards and work another equation.

We are also using algebra tiles and Hands-On Equations to develop conceptual understanding and provide visual explanations!

My students enjoyed the task ... found closing the loop a challenge! Groups would come to me ... "Ma'am, the loop closed and I only worked 4 problems." It was a great opportunity for self checking!
